of Environmental, Social Justice and Community stories

About

Judith Mendiolea

Hi, I’m Judith Mendiolea —an award-winning journalist, storyteller, and documentary filmmaker. I’m passionate about environmental, social justice, and community-driven stories. I’ve written for The Guardian, The Telegram, The Journal Pioneer, The Chronicle Herald, Cape Breton Post, Valley Journey Advertiser, South Shore Breaker, The Tri-County Vanguard, The Casket, Truro News, Annapolis Valley Register, The News (New Glasgow), Wild Aura magazine and Island Trails, and I have recently worked with the P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation on their Island Digital Voices documentary series.

I’m also proud to say my documentary At the Edge of the Island, exploring coastal erosion on P.E.I. was awarded Gold at the Atlantic Journalism Awards.

Having lived in four countries and fluent in four languages, I bring an adventurous, adaptable approach to my work. I love exploring stories with a deep lense, learning from different cultures, and connecting with people in meaningful ways.

At the Edge of the Island

Prince Edward Island’s coastlines are disappearing due to climate change and accelerated erosion. This award-winning documentary explores the personal stories, expert insights, and solutions being implemented to combat the loss of land and history.

Watch it now, share it, and help raise awareness to secure funding for a longer, more in-depth version of this project.

Sukwi'sim (Auntie's Place)

Through a sacred dream that acted as a premonition, Madlene Sark, a revered knowledge keeper of Epekwit (P.E.I.) was called to create Sukwi'sim Healing Lodge—a sanctuary designed to bring peace, healing, and a deeper connection to the land for Indigenous communities.

This documentary delves into the layers of Madlene's life, her personal struggles, and the wisdom that guided her on a path to create a sacred space where others can find their own healing.

Sponsored by the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation, this film is part of the Island Digital Voices series, offering a rare glimpse into the powerful story of a woman who has dedicated her life to fostering peace within her community.

The premiere, as heard in CBC, invited viewers to explore the transformative power of Indigenous knowledge and support the healing in the heart of PEI’s rich cultural landscape.
